Pregnancy typically is associated with a variety of physical aches and pains, but for many expectant mothers, chiropractic care is considered a safe and effective way to reduce pain and discomfort and encourage a faster and safe delivery.
“We can help with all the factors from back pain to issues that easily come with pregnancy just by making sure everything is lined up and there is less stress on the body,” says Dr. Crystal Green with Green Family Chiropractic. “Ideally, we like to see pregnant women from the beginning of their pregnancy throughout.”
During pregnancy, the body produces a hormone called relaxin, which helps relax muscles for the birth. The combination of the additional hormones and physical changes during pregnancy can cause stretched ligaments and additional pain and strain on the body that chiropractic care can help with, says Robert Grimm, chiropractor at Grimm Southside Chiropractic.
“There are a bunch of hormones during pregnancy. One is called relaxin,” he says. “It relaxes ligaments so the baby can come out, but it’s not a silver bullet, so it relaxes every ligament in the body and it stays there until six weeks after the birth. The ligaments stay loose and if they left something, they can slide out of place.”
Receiving chiropractic care during pregnancy can help alleviate pain, may reduce some pregnancy-related symptoms and can help reduce labor time. Chiropractors often see women from pre-pregnancy to post partum to address any pain issues and make sure everything is properly aligned for labor and delivery, Green says.
“It can help decrease their labor time and it helps make them tremendously more comfortable,” she says. “We can also help with positioning toward the end, because your back and pelvis alignment are very big factors in how the baby settles down into your pelvis and how they come out or how they don’t come out.”
